JENNER, Isaac Walter

Isaac Walter Jenner was a self-taught artist who had some success in England before moving to Brisbane in 1883. An earlier life in the British Royal Navy encouraged his interest in painting predominately marine subjects. In Brisbane, Jenner was a founding member of the Queensland Art Society and lobbied consistently for the establishment of the Queensland National Art Gallery. He taught art at Miss O’Connor’s School in Oxley, and had a private teaching studio at the Brisbane Central Technical College from 1887. Jenner’s own studio, located in the inner-western suburb of Taringa, attracted the leading Queensland artists of the time.
