Douglas Watkin’s The Queen & I 2011 is a graphic novel–style animation that reconstructs the extraordinary set of circumstances that brought Watkin’s parents together in 1954, when the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II visited Cairns on her Royal Tour. As a documentary filmmaker and storyteller turned artist, Watkin wanted to shed light on a positive and empowering story of a Torres Strait Islander family in the context of mainstream Australian history.
