Otobong Nkanga was born in Kano in northern Nigeria. She has studied at the DasArts, Amsterdam School of the Arts (2005-08); Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam (2002-03); École Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts Paris (1995-2001); and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile – Ife, Nigeria (1992-94). She teaches Fine Art at the Gerriet Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam.
Nkanga has participated in the Sharjah, Taipei, Dakar, São Paulo, Havanna, and Benin biennials. Her works were included in ‘Africa Remix: Contemporary Art of a Continent’, museum kunst palast, Düsseldorf (2004), Hayward Gallery, London (2005), Centre Pompidou, Paris (2005), Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2006), Johannesburg Art Gallery (2007); and ‘Snap judgments: New Positions in Contemporary African Photography’, New York (2006). Solo exhibitions include ‘Contained Measures of Tangible Memories: Indigo Regina’, L'appartement22, Rabat, Morocco (2012); ‘Diagonal Views’, Nieuwe Vide, Haarlem (2009); ‘Pointe Noire Fragments’, Centre Culturel Français, Pointe-Noire, Republic of Congo (2009); and ‘Smokescreen, Fokus 2’ (with Jens Haaning), Kunstverein Springhornhof, Neuenkirchen (2004).
