Hazoumé was born in Porto-Novo, the capital city of Benin, in 1962 where he continues to live and work. His art work first came to broad international attention when it was included in the ‘Out of Africa’ exhibition held at the Saatchi Gallery, London in 1992. Since that time his work has been exhibited in major exhibitions internationally including the Biennales of Johannesburg, Istanbul, Havana, Liverpool, Kwangju, and Lyon. In 2007 he was included in Documenta 12 where he was awarded the prestigious Arnold Bode prize. In 2009 he was awarded the prize of the Third Moscow Biennale.
Hazoumé is an important figure in the art community of Benin and in 2005 he collaborated in the founding of the Foundation Zinsou in Cotonou, Benin, a private foundation with the aim of promoting contemporary African art.
